Deep in the mountains of Iiyama, skilled artisans have spent generations perfecting the traditional techniques of Buddhist altar craftsmanship. Woodcarving, metal engraving, maki-e lacquer art — now you can step into their world and create something truly your own.

Choose Your Craft

Workshop 1: Woodcarving(木彫) Duration: 2 hrs Price: 2,000 yen~

Learn part of the refined woodcarving techniques used to decorate Buddhist altar pillars. Guided by a certified traditional craftsman, you’ll carve your own design into a small plate, tray, or chopstick rest. Please let us know your preferred item when booking.

Workshop 2: Metal Engraving(彫金) Duration: 2.5 hrs Price: 4,000 yen

Using patterned tools, hammer or carve your own design into a copper plate to make a one-of-a-kind small dish — the same technique used for Buddhist altar metalwork. Other items available upon request.

Workshop 3: Maki-e(蒔絵) Duration: 2 hrs Price: 5,000 yen

Create art using lacquer and gold powder — the elegant technique seen on the doors of Buddhist altars. Sample designs are provided, making it perfect for first-timers.

How to Join

Choose one of the three workshops. Each session is limited to 4 participants.
