Autumn of Tradition and Creativity — Craft Workshops at Iiyama Station!

A special series of hands-on workshops will be held at the Shinetsu Shizenkyo Tourist Information Center on the 1st floor of JR Iiyama Station, where you can experience the traditional crafts rooted in the Iiyama region.

From making Uchiyama Washi paper lanterns and metal accessories to hand weaving, painting local clay dolls, and crafting Onuma brooms—there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Join us for a creative experience filled with the warmth of handmade craftsmanship.

Event Details
  • October 18 (Sat) – Glass Lantern Making with Uchiyama Washi

    (4 participants per session / ¥2,500)

Time: 4 sessions – ①10:00 / ②11:00 / ③13:00 / ④14:00
Duration: Approx. 1 hour
Fee: ¥2,500 (cash only)
Capacity: 4 participants per session
Target age: Elementary school students and older (younger children must be accompanied by a guardian)
What to bring: Apron or clothes that can get wet (water is used)

Instructor: Uchiyama Tesuki Washi Experience House (Kijimadaira Village)
Details: Create a softly glowing glass lantern using Uchiyama Washi, a handmade paper with a 350-year history—perfect as an interior accent.

  • October 26 (Sun) – Metalwork: Bookmark & Accessories

(5 participants per session / ¥3,500)

Time: 2 sessions – ①10:00–12:00 / ②13:00–15:00
Duration: Approx. 2 hours
Fee: ¥3,500 (cash only)
Capacity: 5 participants per session
Target age: 8 years and older (under 8 must be accompanied by a guardian)
Notes: Hammer work involved—please watch your hands.

Instructor: Washimori Kanagu (Iiyama City)
Details: Using the same metal engraving techniques found in Iiyama’s Buddhist altar fittings, create your own bookmark, ring, or ear cuff.

  • November 9 (Sat) – Handwoven Tapestry

    (2 participants per session / ¥2,000)

Time: 4 sessions – ①10:00 / ②11:00 / ③13:00 / ④14:00
Duration: Approx. 30 minutes (you may finish tying the threads at home)
Fee: ¥2,000 (cash only)
Capacity: 2 participants per session
Target age: All ages welcome (under 6 must be accompanied by a guardian)

Instructor: Ori no Kobo Itotanoshi (Iiyama City)
Details: Weave yarn, fabric, and natural fibers to create an original mini tapestry—great for kids and beginners alike.

Instructor: Japan Clay Doll Museum (Nakano City)
Details: Paint your favorite colors onto a Nakano clay doll, a beloved local folk toy. Choose from three designs: Penguin, Shiba Dog, or “Left Horse.”

  • November 23 (Sun) – Mini Onuma Broom Workshop

    (5 participants / ¥4,000)

Time: 10:00–12:00
Fee: ¥4,000 (cash only)
Capacity: 5 participants
Target age: 4th grade and up (elementary students must be accompanied by a guardian)
What to bring: Clothes you don’t mind getting dirty (you’ll be working seated on the floor)

Instructor: Onuma Broom Promotion Association (Iiyama City)
Details: Craft a functional mini broom using the traditional Onuma broom techniques of Nagano Prefecture. Choose your thread color and create your own “usable work of art.”
