Chopin at Makino Bookstore – Violin & Piano

An afternoon of Chopin, surrounded by books

Makino Bookstore（マキノ書店）sits on Honmachi Shopping Street（本町商店街）in central Iiyama. On most days the only sound inside is the quiet step of someone browsing the shelves. On the afternoon of Sunday, September 6, 2026, the room fills with violin and piano instead.

Performing are Tatsuya Muraishi on violin and Kinuko Yamada on piano, with a program that moves from familiar favorites such as Elgar’s “Salut d’Amour” and Bach’s “Air on the G String” to Chopin’s nocturnes. There are just 30 unreserved seats — close enough to hear the players breathe.

During the intermission, guests are served a pour of Mizuo, the local Iiyama sake, along with cookies from Patisserie Hirano and one drink of their choice. Settle in with the bookshelves at your back and let the music linger.

The same Sunday, September 6, the “Tokubetsu Rokusai-ichi” street market is held on the very same Honmachi Shopping Street. Browse the market in the morning, then take a seat among the bookshelves in the afternoon.
